Canfield falls in semis of Holiday Duals

The Canfield High varsity wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of its annual Holiday Duals Dec. 19, before falling to powerhouse Ravenna Southeast 42-27.

This year’s event included eight teams competing in two four-team pools. In addition to Canfield and Southeast, the field included the nation’s No. 1 high school wrestling team St. Paris Graham, Ashtabula Lakeside, Tallmadge, Rootstown, Revere and Conneaut Valley.

Canfield went 3-0 in its pool, defeating Lakeside (59-11), Tallmadge (55-18) and Rootstown (52-24). Outstanding performers for the day were Leo Daprile (135 pounds), Alex Benedict (130), Robby Reed (125) and Anthony Spencer (103). All were 4-0 in the tournament.

St. Paris Graham dominated the tournament. Graham wrestlers competed in 70 matches, and of all those, only four opposing wrestlers survived the six-minute matches without being pinned or losing by technical fall. Canfield’s returning district qualifier Robby Reed (125) and senior Mark Douglas (215) were two that went the distance.
