Teen Programs
“Celebrate Teen Tech Week at Your Library.” March 7-13.
“‘Let it Shine’ Video Contest.” Enter our Teen Tech Week 2010 Video Contest. The challenge will be to create your own video tribute to your library, focusing on whatever aspect of the library you like or find most useful. Teens in grades 7-12 are eligible. Individuals or groups of no more than three teens may enter videos in the contest. At least one group member must have a valid library card from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. One winner or group of winners will be awarded a cash prize. Guidelines are available at your local library or on our Web site www.teenxtremeonline.org. Adult Programs
“Information Fair for National Consumer Protection Week.” For the second year, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office will visit libraries the week of March 7-13 for an information fair aimed at providing information of importance to all consumers. This year’s theme is “Dollars and Sense: Rated ‘A’ for All Ages” and highlights consumer education for every stage of life, from grade school to retirement. The information fair will feature free resources that can help you protect your privacy, manage money and debt, avoid identity theft, understand credit and mortgages and steer clear of frauds and scams. “Business & Investment Center, Creating a Business Plan.” Although business plans are created in order to obtain funding, more and more businesses are developing business plans for refocusing their development and mission. “Friends of the Library Meetings.” Austintown, 10 a.m. March 15, William Lawson, executive director of the Arms Museum and the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, will speak on the importance of maintaining the history of the Valley and Youngstown. He also will detail the expansions plans of the historical society to renovate the historic Harry Burt Building on West Federal Street into a state-of-the-art history center. “Grant Center: Finding Foundation Support for Your Education.” A one-hour, hands-on class on obtaining financial support for your studies. A demonstration on the use of Foundation Grants to Individuals Online will show you how to quickly search through detailed descriptions of more than 6,000 foundation programs that fund students, artists, researchers and other individual grant-seekers. You’ll learn to find accurate, up-to-date information on foundations that fund, among other things, educational support scholarships, fellowships, loans, internships, awards, prizes and grants by nomination. “Genealogy: Searching Military Records.” An introduction to searching military records, with the focus being the National Archives Web site and the library’s subscription databases, particularly Footnote. “Free Tax Preparation.” The library will again provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. VITA and TCE provide services for low- to middle-income taxpayers. (Note: Taxpayers with significant self-employment income, capital gains or complex transactions should seek the counsel of a professional tax preparer.)
