KO Drugs Boxing tourney sets sign-up dates

YOUNGSTOWN — The 2010 K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tourney is set for Fridays in April at the I.T.A.M. Banquet Center on Meridian Road.

The tournament, which runs April 9-30, is the 22nd annual event and is open to all high school boys and girls from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Mercer counties.

“Over 150 students entered last season, and we were able to crown 35 champions,” tournament director Chuck Nelson said. “This year, we hope to eclipse both totals.

“Since the tournament’s inception over two decades ago, K.O. Drugs Boxing has provided an opportunity for many young men and women to build confidence and commit to a meaningful program,” Nelson said. “Every participant agrees in writing to refrain from drug or alcohol use while in the month-long competition. This is what we are proudest of.”

The double-elimination tournament is made up of three divisions— Underclass Division (9th & 10th graders), Upperclass Division (11th & 12th graders) and a Female Division.

The Upperclass and Underclass Divisions are comprised of 15 weight classes, whereas the Female Division has five classes.

The bouts will be three 45-second rounds with a one-minute break in between rounds.

The tournament is designed for beginners with safety as the highest priority.

“Short rounds, extra-padded headgears and 18-ounce gloves help keep participants safe, but competent referees and cornermen are also integral to insure safety with over 40 fights each night,” Nelson said.

Registration and weigh-ins will take place at the two Dick’s Sporting Goods on March 13, March 20, March 27 and April 3. The Niles store has signups from noon-2 p.m. and the Boardman store from 3-5 p.m.

Students younger than 18 years old require parental consent.

A $25 registration fee is required to cover the cost of physical exam and health insurance for all participants.

Tickets cost $10 and will be available at the door each night.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the first bout at 7 p.m.
