Hoyt juried exhibition seeks art entries

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts is calling for entries for the 37th annual Hoyt Regional Juried Art Exhibition from April 27-May 28.

Juror is Eric Shiner of the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Registration can be done in person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 13 at the Hoyt, 124 E. Leasure Ave.

Entries must be delivered at this time. All works of art must have been completed within the last three years and be framed and wired for display.

Most media will be accepted within size and weight limitations except video and installation work.

The Regional is open to artists 21 years or older living with a 100-mile radius of New Castle. There is a $20 entry fee for two works and $5 for each additional work. For a prospectus, call (724) 652-2882 or go to hoytartcenter.org.

Victorian to present ‘Sherlock Holmes’

YOUNGSTOWN — Victorian Players Theatre, 702 Mahoning Ave., will present “Sherlock Holmes — The Final Adventure” for three weekends beginning March 5.

The drama, written by Steven Deitz, is being directed by Sam Luptak,Jr.

In the play, the great detective has met his demise, and his loyal friend and colleague Dr. Watson tells the story of his last adventure.

Warren Philharmonic plans benefit party

WARREN — The Warren Philharmonic Orchestra will have a fundraiser party at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Hippodrome Ballroom, 150 High St. NE, downtown. The event, titled “Sweets, Magic & Music,” will include magicians, musicians and sweet treats from the Mocha House restaurants.

The WPO’s next concert will be at 8 p.m. March 27 at Christ Episcopal Church on Atlantic Street NE. It will feature dancers from Ballet Western Reserve and the Westminster College Festival Choir. Admission is $22 ($12 for students, and free for children under 12).

Lecture will focus on blacks in Civil War

YOUNGSTOWN — A free lecture on black women in the Civil War will be presented by Annette Jefferson at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Youngstown Historical Center (Steel Museum), 151 W. Wood St.

The event is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, YSU Center for Applied History and YSU Women’s Studies.

Jefferson’s presentation will focus on Susie King Taylor, who nursed with Clara Barton; Elizabeth Keckley, dressmaker and confidant to Mary Todd Lincoln; Charlotte Forten, college graduate and first black to teach freed slaves in the South; Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and others.

New Amici Trio in free concert

YOUNGSTOWN — The New Amici Trio will perform a free concert at 8 p.m. Thursday in the recital hall in Bliss Hall on the YSU campus. The trio, consisting of cellist Michael Gelfand, violinist Hristo Popov and pianist Per Enflo, has been in existence since 1980. The concert will feature selections from Beethoven and Schubert.

‘Brothers Warner’ DVD is now available

“The Brothers Warner,” a 2008 documentary about the Warner Bros. film studio, will be available on DVD on March 9. The film was written and directed by Cass Warner Sperling, granddaughter of Harry Warner, who is one of the four brothers who founded the Warner dynasty. The Warner brothers were natives of New Castle, Pa. Their first foray into the film business was as owners of a chain of movie theaters in the Youngstown and Pittsburgh areas.
