Gysin surpasses 1,000 points; Mineral Ridge girls are ousted

CANTON — Makeup games can be milestone games, too.

Such was the case during the East Palestine High boys basketball team’s 59-45 win over Canton Heritage on Friday night at Malone University.

East Palestine senior Ben Gysin and Canton Heritage’s Ken Hill both surpassed 1,000 points — on back-to-back possessions, no less.

Entering the season-ending game, Gysin needed 19 and Hill 25.

Gysin finished with 20 and Hill 28.

In the fourth quarter, Gysin, a 6-foot-5 post player, reached his big moment. Within 15 seconds, Hill scored to top 1,000.

Gysin finished with 1,001 points, while Hill has 1,003.

Gysin also grabbed 12 rebounds, while Trevor Reiser had eight of the Bulldogs’ 32 caroms.

Next, third-seeded East Palestine (17-3) will play the United-Akron Manchester winner to open tournament play at the Division III district at Salem High.

The Bulldogs won the Inter Tri-County League Tier One by posting a 14-0 record. It was the second-straight title for East Palestine.
