Rachel Wilkins has suffered job loss, overwhelming medical and utility bills and the loss of her 17-year-old daughter, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in 2007. Now she faces the prospect of losing her house in a foreclosure.

“I hope they have a heart and let me keep my house. I hope they don’t throw me out,” Wilkins said, referring to the loan-servicing company that filed the foreclosure against her.
