Speech team successful at tournament


The Poland Speech and Debate Team participated in the National Qualifying National Forensics League District tournament Feb. 18-20 at Boardman High School.

Junior Britta Carson made the semifinals in Humorous Interpretation. Sophomore Jayne Catlos made the final round in Original Oratory and is the second alternate to the national tournament.

Junior Lidia Mowad and Catie Carney debated their way to the final round of Public Forum debate by winning six straight rounds of competition with a 3-0 judge decision for each round.

Mowad and Carney are the first students in Poland to advance to the National Forensics League National Tournament in their event — Public Forum Debate.

They will travel to Kansas City in June to represent Poland Seminary High School in this elite competition.

The next stop for the team is the Ohio High School Speech League state tournament, where 15 members of the team will compete for the championship title in each of their events.
