Spectrum Metal, EPA reach settlement

BOARDMAN — Spectrum Metal Finishing, 535 Bev Road, has agreed to a settlement with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency that requires it to install additional pollution control equipment and pay a civil penalty of $420,000.

The EPA said the company violated state laws by installing a new coating line in 2000 without the proper pollution control equipment and permits.

Spectrum will be allowed to offset $320,000 of the fine toward the purchase of new equipment to reduce emissions. The equipment will cost $1.4 million and “is expected to result in a substantial reduction of air contaminants and odors leaving the facility,” the EPA said.

Neil Chrisman, company president, said in a release that the equipment goes beyond standard EPA requirements and “demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship.”
