At area churches

Eastern Orthodox Clergy Association of Mahoning Valley: The association has scheduled Sunday Lenten vesper services, all at 5 p.m., during Great Lent. Services will be: Sunday at Holy Ghost Orthodox Church, 18 S. Richview Ave., Youngstown, with the Rev. Andrew Gall as speaker; March 7 at St. Mark Orthodox Church, 3560 Logan Way, Liberty, with the Rev. Andrew Gromm as speaker; March 14 at St. John’s the Orthodox Church, 301 Struthers-Liberty Road, Campbell, with speaker, the Rev. Stephen Halowach; and March 21 at St. Michael’s Carpatho-Russian Church, 125 Steel St., Youngstown, with speaker, the Rev. John Harvey.

St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive, Boardman: The Christian Formation Commission will present a Lenten mission, “Count Our Blessings.” The programs, set for three Mondays in March, will include a complimentary soup and bread dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., speaker from 6:30 to 7 followed by a prayer service. On March 8, the Rev. James P. Walker, pastor of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church in Warren, will speak on “The Blessing of Prayer;” March 15, Deacon Paul Lisko of St. Charles and chaplain at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman, “The Blessing of Forgiveness;” and March 22, Monsignor Peter M. Polando, pastor of St. Matthias Church and administrator of Holy Name of Jesus Church, both Youngstown, “The Blessing of Almsgiving.” Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable item for the food pantry.

St. Matthias Church: St. Matthias Church, Youngstown, will sponsor a retreat, “The Cross of Christ,” from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 6 at St. Maron Maronite Church, 1555 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown, and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. March 7 at St. Matthias parish house, 915 Cornell St. A light lunch will be served; a free-will offering will be taken. The retreat will focus on how the cross is central to Christianity. A two-part video presentation with the Rev. Ron Rolheiser will be featured. Registration is required by Monday.
