Canfield relay in hunt for state title after D-I prelims

CANTON — Canfield’s 200-yard freestyle relay team has already earned Division I first team All-Ohio status.

The Cardinals may be thinking bigger.

The quartet of seniors Garrett Trebilcock and Steven Dalvin and juniors Gavin Trebilcock and Ryan O’Malley had the second-fastest time after Friday’s preliminaries (1:25.67) and were less than a tenth of a second off North Canton Hoover’s pace (1:25.58).

They’ll compete in the final today. The top eight teams have already earned first team All-Ohio status.

Canfield finished third in the event last year with a then-school record time of 1:26.15.

The Cardinals are fourth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:10.56. Toledo St. Francis is seeded first (3:07.68).

On the girls side, Canfield’s 200 free relay team of seniors Johnna Dunkel, Kathryn Mason and Emily King and junior Hilary Allen advanced to the consolation finals by placing 15th in Friday’s prelims. The Cardinals’ 400 free relay team is 12th after the preliminaries (3:39.43).

King also competed in two individual events, placing 20th in the 100 buttefly (59.52) and 22nd in the 100 free (54.07).

In Division II competition, McDonald junior Katie Joseph is seeded second in the 100 free with a time of 51.52, while Maplewood junior Jordan Moxley is third (52.03). Fairbanks senior Margo Geer is first (48.63).

Joseph is fourth in the 200 free and Moxley is second in the 50 free (23.66) behind Geer (22.43).

Lakeview junior Emilee Gysegem was third in the 200 IM (2:07.56) and fifth in the 100 back (57.71).

Mooney senior Nick Boniface just missed making the 50 free finals by finishing ninth out of the preliminaries with a time of 21.87.

His younger brother, sophomore Joe Boniface, was 17th (22.34).

Nick placed 17th in the 100 breast (1:03.27). Joe swam in the 100 back but results were not available at press time.
