Tournament set for area colleges

Grove City has the top seed in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament, which begins today at campus sites.

All four leagues with area schools begin postseason competition this week. To the winners go automatic bid to NCAA and NAIA tournaments.

Grove City finished 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the PAC, tying Thomas More for the best record. But the Wolverines won the tiebreaker and with it a first-round bye.

All the other PAC teams begin tournament play tonight — No. 4-seed Thiel plays host to No.5 Washington & Jefferson; No. 3 Bethany plays host to No. 6 Westminster, and No. 7 Waynesburg travels to No. 2 Thomas More.

The semifinals will be Friday, with the highest remaining seed hosting the championship game on Saturday night.

In the PAC women’s tournament, Thomas More is the top seed and will play host to No. 8 Thiel tonight.

Other first round matchups are No. 7 Bethany at No. 2 Washington & Jefferson; No. 6 Chatham at No. 3 Grove City, and No. 5 Waynesburg at No. 4 Westminster.

Both semifinals will be played Friday at the home of the highest remaining seed, with the title game Saturday at 2 p.m.

Mount Union’s women’s team is the No. 2 seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament which begins tonight.

The Purple Raiders (21-4) play host to Otterbein at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the home of the highest remaining seed.

The Mount Union men’s team opens tournament play on Wednesday at No. 2-seed Wilmington.

Hiram and Allegheny are competing in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournaments which begin tonight.

Both Hiram teams will play at Wittenberg, starting with the men’s game at 6 p.m.

Hiram is the No. 6 seed and Wittenberg is the No. 3 seed.

Wittenberg is the top seed in the women’s bracket, while Hiram is the No. 8 seed.

Allegheny’s men’s team is the No. 4 seed and will play host to No. 5 Ohio Wesleyan tonight, while the Gators’ women’s team, the No. 6 seed, travels to No. 3 Denison.

The NCAC semifinals are Friday with the championship games on Saturday.

Malone and Walsh qualified for the American Mideast Conference men’s tournament.

Tonight, Malone (13-15) visits Cedarville at 7:30 p.m.

Walsh (27-2) has a first-round bye and will play at Notre Dame College in South Euclid on Saturday.

The championship game is March 2.

In the AMC women’s bracket, Walsh is seeded third and will play host to Notre Dame, the No. 6 seed, today at 7 p.m. in North Canton.
