Grant for Senior Hotline

YOUNGSTOWN — The Episcopal Diocese of Ohio awarded Help Hotline Crisis Center a $12,000 grant earmarked for its Senior Hotline, which addresses the needs of seniors. The hot line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is sponsored by St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Ave.

A part-time worker is available to provide support to the elderly. Help Hotline also provides suicide-intervention services and crisis intervention. Nationwide, the elderly population is an at-risk group for suicide. For information, call the crisis center at (330) 747-2696.

‘Skate for the Kids’

BOARDMAN — Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will receive $1 from each regular-priced admission during the “Skate for the Kids” Saturday and Sunday at the Ice Zone, 360 McClurg Road.

The event will take place during public ice-skating sessions Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and 7 to 11 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (330) 746-9122.

Boardman openings

BOARDMAN — Township trustees are seeking letters of interest from township residents interested in serving on the civil-service commission or the board of park commissioners.

Those interested in the civil- service commission should submit a letter of interest by March 19 at the government center, 8299 Market St., Boardman 44512, Attn: Stephanie Landers.

More information on the duties of the commission are available on the township Web site, www.boardmantownship.com, under “administration.”

Those interested in serving as a park commissioner should submit a letter of interest by March 26 to Landers at the government center. More information on the duties of park commissioners can be found in the Ohio Revised Code.

All appointments will be made at the trustees’ April 12 regular meeting.

Community partners

YOUNGSTOWN — The South Avenue Area Neighborhood Development Initiative has scheduled a community partners and steering committee meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at Metro Ministries Church of God, 2530 South Ave.

The purpose of the meeting is to rank and prioritize the analysis information that came out of the last month’s meeting. The initiative was established to support the concept of the Youngstown 2010 plan by a collaboration of individuals from four block watches, real-estate investors and the city of Youngstown.

Dem women’s session

CHAMPION — The 2010 Northeast Region Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus Convention will be from 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Sunday at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center, 528 Educational Highway. The issues panel sessions will cover networking, campaign organization, health care and resources. Guests include Judge Mary Jane Trapp of the 11th District Court of Appeals and April Carson from Alliance for Justice.

A candidate forum featuring U.S. Senate candidates Jennifer Brunner and Lee Fisher will be at 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be served. Advance tickets are $35. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $45.
