Q. Both vulnerable, as South you hold:

x10 6 5 uA J 7 6 3 vQ 9 8 wK 7

Partner opens the bidding with one spade. What do you respond?

A. If you play that a two-over-one response is invitational, by all means bid two hearts. If not, raise to two spades — that is more encouraging than one no trump.

Q. Both vulnerable, as South you hold:

xA Q 10 uA J 8 7 3 vA J 9 5 3 wVoid

Your right-hand opponent opens one heart. What action do you take?

A. Pass to see what develops.

Q. As South, vulnerable, you hold:

x9 5 4 uK J 9 4 vA K 9 8 3 w7

The bidding has proceeded:

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH

1x 2u 2x ?

What do you bid now?

A. If you want to bid the full strength of your hand now, jump to four hearts. Tactically, however, you might do better to underbid with three hearts. The auction is sure to continue and later, if you are pushed to five hearts, you have a better chance to buy the hand, perhaps even doubled.

Q. As South, vulnerable, you hold:

xA uK J 5 4 3 vQ 10 9 6 3 wJ 7

The bidding has proceeded:

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH

1w 1x 4w ?

What action do you take?

A. Introducing either of your suits is out of the question. It is close whether you should double or pass! If you double, partner will obviously know that it’s based on high cards and not trumps, so he can act accordingly.

Q. Neither vulnerable, as South you hold:

xA 10 9 6 uA Q 6 5 2 v9 8 3 wK

The bidding has proceeded:

NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST

1u 2x* ?

*Weak

What action do you take?

A. A cue-bid of three spades is the only way to tell partner of your slam aspirations.

Q. Neither vulnerable, as South you hold:

xK J 8 2 uA 9 vK 6 2 wJ 9 5 4

Your right-hand opponent opens the bidding with one diamond. What action do you take?

A. Should you double and partner responds one heart, you are not strong enough to bid one spade — that promises some 16 points and a good suit. And while we do not mind a one-level overcall on a four-card suit, the quality of your spade suit leaves something to be desired. Pass.
