Police seek suspect in hit-and-run that killed former state trooper

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Authorities still are searching for a tractor-trailer driver who killed a retired Pennsylvania state trooper in a hit-and-run on Interstate 80 in Wolf Creek Township near here.

Bill Ray Williams, 65, of Erie, died at Grove City Medical Center late Thursday of injuries resulting from the accident, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Thursday. A witness told state police Williams, who was a retired trooper from the Mercer barracks, was eastbound on I-80 when his vehicle stopped in the right lane of traffic. Williams crossed in front of his car to get to the driver’s side, stepping into the left lane of traffic, when he was hit by the tractor-trailer, which was changing from the right to the left lane, according to a police report.

The operator of the truck didn’t stop after the accident. State police ask anyone who witnessed the accident or has information to call (724) 662-6162.
