Struthers’ boys, Boardman girls win

STRUTHERS — Nine boys’ teams and eight individual boys not on a qualifying team will advance to the district tournament at AMF Hall of Fame Lanes in Canton following their finishes in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Mahoning/Trumbull sectional bowling tournament at Holiday Lanes Saturday.

Boardman was the girls’ champion with 4050 pinfall, followed by Hubbard (3794), Struthers (3736), Niles (3692), Fitch (3670), Canfield (3644), McDonald (3542) and Girard (3281). Those girls teams advance to the district.

Struthers’ boys rolled 4472 to beat Liberty (4368) and Howland (4365) for the top three spots among boys’ teams, while Harding (4185), Fitch (4182), Canfield (4099), Hubbard (4051) and Ursuline (3996) also qualified to the district on Feb. 27-28.

Among individuals, Chaney’s Richard Mauro had a whopping 785 to beat all others, including a second-best 708 by Fitch’s Vince Viglio.

Although Chaney did not advance, Mauro does, along with seven others, including Chaney teammate Kyle Staton (691), Girard’s Clayton Cupan (673), McDonald’s Tyler Burk (644), LaBrae’s Zachary Ewing (643), LaBrae’s Shelby Persons (639), Campbell Memorial’s Tom Pulice (631) and Mineral Ridge’s Patrick Celli (627).

Behind Mauro and Viglio, the other top four finishers were Howland’s Nick Wolcott with 694, Liberty’s Rickey Evans with 692 and Staton.

Howland’s Morgan Alden was the top individual among girls with 726, followed by Boardman’s Ciarra Morgan (688), Boardman’s Tiffany Dugan (635), Fitch’s Gina Cheff (610), and Hubbard’s Samantha Dudley (610).

Besides Alden, other individuals advaning were Liberty’s Jillian Barker (572), Chaney’s Michelle Heldreth (554), Harding’s Katie Discerni (553), Lakeview’s Kayla Reese (550), Mooney’s Rachael Letscher (541), Ursuline’s Monica Simon (529) and Mineral Ridge’s Jordan Kolesar (518).
