BOARDMAN — Brother Guy Consolmagno of the Vatican Observatory will be the featured speaker for the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown on March 4 at Antone’s Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St.

Brother Consolmagno will speak on the topic: “Religion and Science: What’s the Connection?”

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m.

The cost is $15.

Souper Bowl of Caring

BOARDMAN — The youth at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, raised $1,055.14 in the Souper Bowl of Caring on Super Bowl Sunday.

Funds will go to Lutheran World Federation for assisting in the Haiti Earthquake Relief work.

Dinner and discussion

GIRARD — An Anglican priest in England told his congregation that shoplifting is acceptable when a person is in desperate need and all other legal sources of help have been exhausted. Is this appropriate and reasonable advice? Do emergency conditions ever justify temporarily setting aside our ethical principles and moral law?

These and other related questions will be the basis for a dinner and discussion on Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Girard, 890 Church Hill Road.

Organ concert

YOUNGSTOWN — Trinity United Methodist Church, 30 W. Front St., will present Dawn Bradley Filler in an organ concert at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The program will include “Carillon” by Herbert Murrill, Prelude and Fugue in C. by .J. S. Bach and “Meditation from Three Improvisations” by Louis Vierne.

Bradley Filler received a bachelor of music degree in organ performance/sacred music from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She as a two-time winner of the Young Organist Competition sponsored by the American Guild of Organists and earned the Colleague Certificate through the Guild. She received a master of music degree in organ performance at the University of Akron.

She is director of music and organist for the First United Methodist Church of Akron where she directs the adult vocal, handbell, and occasional instrumental choirs.

Lenten journey

YOUNGSTOWN — The Revs. Jim Schutte, pastor of St. Leo Church in Cincinnati, and the Rev. James Daprile, pastor of St. Brendan Church, made a medieval pilgrimage from St. Jean Pie dePort, France, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, in the fall of 2009.

They will share memories of their 35-day, some 500-mile journey during a program at 7 p.m. Monday in Maxwell Hall at St. Brendan Church, 2800 Oakwood. They will share the experience of walking the pilgrimage route of St. James in words, prayers and images and link it to the contemporary Lenten journey.

Marriage enrichment

WARREN — Monument of Faith Church of God in Christ, 2165 Highland Ave., will honor Brenda Herron at 5 p.m. Sunday. She is the wife of the Rev. David L. Herron Sr., whom she married in July 1980. She is the mother of Christina A. Herron-May, David L. Herron Jr. and Daniel P.C. Herron.

She is the director of Women’s Ministry, Young Adult Choir, Youth Choir and the Music Ministry. She is the music director for Kjuan & Company. She serves in many ministries and committees including Pastors Aide Committee, Couple’s Ministry, Elders and Minister’s Wives, Teacher of Women’s Sunday School class, Prayer and Bible Band.

Gospel concert

BOARDMAN — Christ’s Church, 7155 Glenwood Ave., will host a Gospel music concert Sunday with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the concert at 6. Featured will be Royce Taylor, originally from Columbiana, and Donnie Abraham, originally from Boardman. A free-will offering will be taken.

At Bethel Church

YOUNGSTOWN — Bethel Church of God in Christ, 3147 Glenwood Ave., will host Black History celebration brunch at 10 a.m. Feb. 27. The theme is “The Effect of the Church on Black History” with the speaker, Pastor Ernest Walker III of Ebenezer Life Center Church of God in Christ.

At 6 p.m. Feb. 28, the church will sponsor a Gospel musical celebration, “Raise the Praise and Expect a Blessing.” Special guests will be Community Church of God in Christ Male Chorus, Monica Phillips and Visions of Worship, Complete and Antioch Baptist Choir.

Praise celebration

YOUNGSTOWN — The male chorus of New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will present a male chorus celebration with the theme, “Men of Valor — United for One Purpose,” at 5 p.m. Feb. 28. The event is free and open to all.

Male choruses from Mount Zion Baptist, Mount Gilead, St.Andrewes African Methodist Episcopal, Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal and Greater Friendship Baptist churches will participate. Special guest will be the male chorus of St. James AME Zion Church in Massillon.
