staff report

CLEVELAND — Canfield senior Garrett Trebilcock won the 200-yard individual medley and advanced to state competition in three other events at Friday’s Division I district swim meet at Cleveland State University.

Trebilcock, who won a Div. II state title in the 200 IM last winter, finished the event with a time of 1:55.89, more than a second ahead of North Canton’s Mitch Alters (1:56.98).

He also finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (47.49) and was a member of the second-place 200 freestyle relay (1:27.13) and fourth-place 400 free relay (3:14.92).

His younger brother, Gavin, was also on those relays, as was Steven Dalvin and Ryan O’Malley.

The top five individuals/relays in each event automatically advance to next weekend’s state meet in Canton, while several others will earn at-large berths based on statewide times.

Canfield finished sixth in the team standings, while Boardman was 17th with 44 points and Warren Harding 27th with 14 points.

On the girls side, Canfield had two relays finish fifth to advance to state competition: the 200 free relay (1:39.84) and 400 free relay (3:38.30).

Johanna Dunkel, Hilary Allen, Kathryn Mason and Emily King both swam on the relays as the Cardinals finished eighth in the team standings with 100 points. Boardman was 18th (33 points) and Warren Harding 26th (24 points).

Boardman junior Ashley Aldan set a school record with a 24.88 in the 50 freestyle and was also on the school record-setting 200 medley (1:54.02) and 400 free (3:44.13) relays.
