Boardman wrestlers second after sectionals’ first day

Boardman is second behind Twinsburg in the Div. I wrestling sectional, while Girard and Jackson-Milton are third and fourth behind Waterloo and Garfield in Div. III heading into today’s semifinals and championship and consolation finals.

Division II results from West Branch High were not available at press time.

In Div. I at Fitch High, Boardman had eight individuals win in the upper bracket: Nick Mancini (103), Peter Ryan (112), Jerry Pasquale (119), John Dillon (125), Ricky Zupko (130), Joe Fernback (135), Nico Graziani (140) and Tim Taumopeau (285).

Howland’s six wrestlers still unbeaten are: J.R. Perry (103), Kyle Descenna (119), Alex Cornicelli (125), Robby Klose (145), Bryce Tricker (171) and Chuck Sayre (215).

Fitch’s Shawn Ague (112), R.J. Balog (160) and Andy Koch (189) are all headed for championship semifinals beginning at 9 a.m.

In Div. III at Rootstown, Jackson-Milton 135-pounder Alex Tomaino won twice by pin: over Waterloo’s Parker Gibson in 53 seconds, then over Girard’s Jacob Bohr in 1:32.

Girard’s Josh Barnes (103) pinned Rootstown’s Tyler Hilliard in 1:24.

After a pair of byes, Jackson-Milton’s Vinnie Pizzuto (112) meets Liberty’s Matt Pontuti today. Pontuti also reached via byes.

At 119, Jackson-Milton’s Tim Wiseman won by technical fall over Rootstown’s Kyle Taylor, 18-3. Today, Wisesman wrestles Garfield’s Tyler Knepper. Also, Brookfield’s Tyler Thompson pinned Warren JFK’s Mike Rowbotham in 1:15. At 125, Girard’s Jacob Carpenter won via a 27-9 technical fall over St. Thomas Aquinas’ Trevor Wilson. After byes, Liberty’s Ryan Shimko is slated to meet Garfield’s Tanner Lawrence.

At 130, J-M’s Johnny Matacic and Girard’s Jim Golden will tussle today as will Liberty’s Zach Hackett and Aquinas’ Mario Palomba.

Also at 135, South Range’s Max Brooke won by fall in 3:26 over Andrew Macenczak of St. Thomas Aquinas.

At 140, Girard’s Aaron Hall decisioned Mogadore’s Ryan Harmon,, 3-2, and South Range’s Hayden Brooke won by pin over Wellsville’s Joe Dowling in 3:02.

At 145, Liberty’s Justin Hideg beat Leetonia’s Kyle Gray via pin in 2:54, while Jackson-Milton’s Tyler Collins also scored a pin in 0:59 over South Range’s Jacob Mitchell.

At 152, Girard’s Nico Francis registered a 9-0 major decision over Derek Walro of St. Thomas Aquinas, while Jackson-Milton’s Dylan Tomaino beat Garfield’s Josh Hecky, 4-2.

At 160, another Jackson-Milton Tomaino: Anthony, scored a pin in 1:47 over South Range’s Kevin Groff and Girard’s Josh Alexander beat Rootstown’s Dylan Baldwin via pin in 2:51.

At 189, Liberty’s C.J. Edmonds pinned Wellsville’s Tim White in 5:21.

At 215, Girard’s Alex Saunders won by fall in 2:19 over Warren JFK’s Plineth Hinton, while Brookfield’s Stephen Shaw pinned Rootstown’s Brian Goodnight in 20 seconds.

At 285, Girard’s Craig Frankford pinned Dante Sumser of St. Thomas Aquinas in 1:57.
