Community college will aid Warren and the Valley

Community college will aid Warren and the Valley

EDITOR:

ACTION has been a very vocal advocate for the establishment of a campus to house Eastern Gateway Community College for sometime now. ACTION conducted a signature drive, collecting approximately 5,000 signatures from residents who supported our position that Eastern Gateway Community College should have its own freestanding location in the Greater Mahoning Valley. ACTION then drove to Columbus to deliver the petitions to Chancellor Eric Fingerhut on Nov. 12.

ACTION is holding an informational public forum March 1 at 7 p.m. at Liberty High School in support of Congressman Tim Ryan’s recent announcement that a campus would be established on the square in Warren.

The topic will be Eastern Gateway Community College: Where We Are, Where We’re Going, How Do We Get There.

The keynote speaker for this event is Congressman Ryan, D-17th. ACTION met with him Jan. 5 to discuss his announcement that a campus for Eastern Gateway Community College would be established in downtown Warren. At the conclusion of this meeting the congressman agreed to speak at this public forum to explain to the residents of the Mahoning Valley how Eastern Gateway Community College will go forward and to answer any questions the community may have regarding the evolution of Eastern Gateway Community College.

In conjunction with this public forum, ACTION is partnering with Eastern Gateway Community College to host a college fair from 5 to 7 p.m. for students, potential students, displaced workers, parents of potential students or educators. They will be able to see what classes Eastern Gateway Community College offers and what classes they plan to offer in the future. Increased enrollment at Eastern Gateway Community College will benefit Warren in future and the Valley in the long term.

Rate increases are spiteful

EDITOR:

I notice the Youngstown Water Department has decided to increase the water cost to the local consumers by more than 50 percent. This proves you can be ripped of without electing anyone to office, as with our government.

The city has many more people moving out than it has moving in and no wonder, it is one of the most unsafe cities in the USA to live in. I was born in the city and it has become a disgrace to everyone who used to live there. I never thought it would become a ghost town, but it is certainly headed that way. One thing you can find there, is dog fights, drug dealers, empty parking places, because no one wants to go there unless they have to — not to mention getting shot on purpose or by accident.

The Water Department couldn’t get the surrounding areas annexed, so they raise the water cost to get even. This proves they have no vision for the future of the city I once loved to call my home.
