CINCINNATI — Cincinnati and the Akron-Canton area have set February snowfall records, and other Ohio regions, including the Mahoning Valley, are getting close as the state continues its recovery from the month’s third big winter storm.

The National Weather Service says the latest storm pushed Cincinnati past its record snow total for February, 21.4 inches set in 1914. On Tuesday, the Akron- Canton Airport surpassed its 2008 record for the month of 25.8 inches.

The official snow total for the Mahoning Valley as of Wednesday was 26.5 inches, the second-most for a February in the area. The record is 31.7 inches in 2008.

The area averages 6.4 inches of snow at this point in February and averages 10.5 inches for the entire month of February, according to statistics compiled by the NWS.

The weather service measures snowfall for the Valley at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

During the major snowstorm that hit the area Feb. 5 and 6, the area’s official measurement was 8.4 inches. But several communities in Mahoning and Columbiana counties had 20 inches of snow.

It has snowed every day this month except Feb. 8, according to NWS statistics. Light snow is expected in the Valley and most of Ohio today.

Columbus is a few inches away from having its snowiest February ever.
