NILES — Reggie Giancola Jr., a former city councilman, has been chosen by the Democratic Precinct Committee to fill the at-large seat vacated last month by the resignation of longtime Councilman Thomas Scarnecchia.

The committee, meeting shortly before council’s regular session Wednesday, voted 14-6 for Giancola over the other candidate for the seat, Frank Pezzano, a recent retiree from General Motors.

Giancola, 54, a forklift operator at Trinity Industries in Girard, served as Third Ward councilman for 14 years until 1995. He was seated on council after the vote.

Scarnecchia resigned due to “family health reasons.”
