Canfield sets two relay records at Division I sectional swim meet


CANTON — Canfield High swimmers Johanna Dunkel, Hilary Allen, Kathryn Mason and Emily King combined to set two school relay records and qualified for district competition in both events, during Saturday’s girls North Division I sectional meet at the Akron Firestone High pool.

Dunkel, Allen, Mason and King won the 200-yard freestyle relay championship in 1:42.19, and placed second in the 400 free relay in 3:44.10 to set the school records and gain district berths Friday at Cleveland State University.

Gia Velasquez of Canfield also qualified for the district by placing second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.76, just missing breaking her school record.

The Canfield team placed third with 215 points and Boardman fifth with 166, while Hudson won the meet with 463.50.

The Boardman 200 freestyle relay team of Ashley Aldan, Emily Bodamer, Megan Barringer and Colleen Manning placed second in 1:42.53 to also qualify for the district.

Aldan and Bodamer also teamed with Gaby DeAscentis and Jessica Gonda to place fourth in the 200 medley relay in a school-record 1:55.07, but failed to qualify for the district.

Only the top two finishers in each event make it to the district.

In the girls South Division I sectional at Akron Firestone, Warren Harding placed 10th with 181 points. Canton McKinley won with 310 points.

The girls Div. II sectional meet also was held Saturday at the University of Akron, and Poland led the area teams by placing sixth with 128 points.

The Bulldogs were followed by Hubbard and Mooney, both tied for 11th place with 37 points each; Salem, 14th, 24; Western Reserve, 15th, 17; and United, 17th, 2.
