Special pay approved for firefighters


Talks will be set up with New Middletown officials to discuss a joint fire district.

NEW SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Township trustees have agreed to pay firefighters special-circumstances pay of $8 per hour and $9 for fire officers.

Currently, firefighters are paid $10 per call, and officers get $12.

The special-circumstances pay will be in effect in situations where firefighters must stay on a call for a long period of time, such as for a gas leak, officials said.

Trustees also handled these matters at their Wednesday meeting:

UApproved a contract with AAA Medical/Dental Collections, Boardman, to provide emergency medical-service collections. They will work with Columbiania EMS, which does billing for the township.

UAgreed to pay KLG Mobile Intensive, Salem, $1,800 for medical direction for the EMS service from Dr. Anita Ziemak for this year.

UContracted with Waters Building Maintenance, Columbiana, to scrub and wax floors on a quarterly basis for $420 annually.

UAccepted a bid from Francis Gebhardt, a township resident, to mow the township’s two cemeteries for $750 for the season. Other bidders were Lance Approach of Salem, who bid $2,595, and Eric Rogers of Columbiana, who bid $40 per mow for one of the cemeteries and $60 per mow for the other.

UAnnounced they will set up a meeting with New Middletown officials to continue talking about forming a joint fire district.
