Trumbull County 4-H members win scholarships and awards
CORTLAND — Each year Trumbull County 4-H members become eligible for a variety of county, state and national trips and opportunities to better themselves and their communities. Winners of this year’s awards are being announced by Ohio State University Extension, Trumbull County.
Thomas Shay of Newton Falls is the winner of the Citizenship Washington Focus, a national leadership and civic engagement trip where one youth earns a 50 percent scholarship from the Trumbull 4-H Advisory Committee. The alternate is Daniel Montgomery of Newton Falls.
Shay and Montgomery also won the Ohio 4-H Leadership Camp, a weeklong camping experience at Camp Ohio, supported by Nationwide Insurance and the Farm Bureau, and the Carving New Ideas, a three-day leadership workshop with 50 percent scholarships provided by the advisory committee.
Jenna DePizzo of Cortland was awarded the Buckeye Leadership Workshop, a focused recreational leadership camp, and a 50 percent scholarship provided by the advisory committee. Two $200 scholarships provided by the advisory committee for a 4-H members attending a post high school educational institution also went to DePizzo.
The Danforth “I Dare You” award, which encourages youths to better themselves through leadership, went to the two top 4-H’ers, DePizzo and Shay.
Several 4-H members were chosen for leadership positions within the Trumbull County 4-H program. Chosen to be part of the Fashion Board were Amber McMinn of Cortland, Marcy Rufener of Orangeville, Sarah Smith of Fowler and Amy Vankanegan of Kinsman. Named as junior leaders on the advisory committee were DePizzo, Meagan Jackson of Warren and Shay.
DePizzo, Jackson and Montgomery have completed Ohio 4-H Older Youth applications to compete for state opportunities.
