She also received offers to play basketball.

McDONALD — Whenever McDonald High senior Joh’Vonnie Mosley is asked which sport she likes better, track and field or basketball, she borrows a strategy from another sport.

She punts.

“I get asked that all the time,” she said, “and I like both of them.”

Ultimately, she got a better offer from track and field, which is why she recently signed a letter-of-intent to throw at Kent State University.

“I heard from a lot of small schools for basketball and I got a lot more offers for track, so I decided to stick with that,” said Mosley, who was first recruited by Kent throwing coach Nathan Fanger last summer. “When I visited Kent, they were very nice, all the throwers were nice, it’s not too far from home and they had the program I want to go into [nursing].

“That’s why I made the decision.”

Mosley won district and regional titles in both the shot put and discus last spring and was also a state qualifier in the discus as a sophomore.

She hasn’t performed her best in Columbus, however, placing ninth in the shot and 13th in the discus last spring.

“My goal is to really surpass what I did last year,” said Mosley, who was also a member of the Blue Devils’ state-qualifying 4x100-meter relay. “I didn’t perform well at state and I just want to have a better season than I did last year.

“Hopefully I can make it to state without any injuries and perform well.”

Mosley has family members who are nurses and said she always wanted to do something in the medical field, so nursing was a natural choice.

“It’s a good field to get into,” Mosley said. “Once I’m done with college, I know I’ll be able to find work.”

For all her success in track, Mosley has been just as good on the court, where she recently surpassed 1,500 career points. She ranks third all-time in career scoring at McDonald.

“It’s a blessing,” she said. “I’m fortunate to have stayed away from being injured all four years and to have the coaches I do and the girls I’ve played with the past four years.

“They’ve helped me get where I am.”
