Valentine’s events for Easter Seals programs

Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties is having two Valentine’s Day weekend events to benefit its programs.

The “Have A Heart” event will provide cash plus a donation to Easter Seals to anyone who brings mismatched, broken, old or unwanted gold, silver and/or platinum items to Komara Jeweler’s in Cornersburg and Howland from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Customers will receive cash for their items, plus Komara’s will donate a percentage of the value of the items to Easter Seals. Proceeds will help support Easter Seals programs and services for children and adults with disabilities and special needs.

Also, Friendly’s Restaurant in Poland is offering Valentine cards through Saturday to patrons who make a $1 donation to Easter Seals. The cards are redeemable at Friendly’s for five free kid’s cones and $5 off any $25 purchase. The donations support summer camp programs at Easter Seals.

Veteran attacks director of shelter; both killed

CLEVELAND — An Air Force veteran who was told to move out of a homeless shelter because he had been uncooperative about attending counseling fatally attacked the center’s director Wednesday and then was shot to death by police when he charged at them with a knife and an ax, authorities said.

Officers said that when they arrived at the homeless shelter, Raymond Ice was holding the weapons and was standing over the body of shelter director Rita Ciofani, 59. He ignored orders to drop the weapons, charged at officers and was Tasered and shot, police spokesman Sgt. Sammy Morris said.
