Pa. care home closed after man found dead outside
CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) — The state Department of Welfare has closed a personal care home without heat or electricity after a resident died in the cold outside.
A man who answered the phone at Kingdom Manor in Canonsburg Tuesday says officials there have no comment.
Washington County officials say 60-year-old Wayne Murphy died of exposure after he went missing from the home Saturday. His body was found at the bottom of a snowy staircase behind a church across the street Sunday evening.
Nine people still living in the home Monday were moved to other facilities or taken in by relatives.
Spokeswoman Stacey Witalec says welfare officials learned about the home’s problems from media reports of Murphy’s death. The home had already been ordered to close by Feb. 17 because of other problems found during an inspection.
