Heroes event rescheduled

BOARDMAN — The Heroes of the Mahoning Valley event, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Feb 20.

The event, sponsored by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross, will be at 10 a.m. at Antone’s Banquet Centre in Boardman. The breakfast honors local heroes who have made a difference in the community within the past year.

Tickets for the event, hosted by Scott Schneider, the 21 WFMJ “Today Show” anchor, are $15. For more information or to reserve a seat, call Gail Froomkin at (330) 726-6063.

MathCounts rescheduled

YOUNGSTOWN — The annual MathCounts competition scheduled for Thursday at Youngstown State University has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. next Tuesday because of the impending winter storm.

Some 250 middle and junior high school students are expected to participate in the event in YSU’s Kilcawley Center.

Man shot in Warren

WARREN — A 35-year-old city man was in critical condition Monday in the intensive- care unit at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being shot Sunday evening at a West Avenue Northwest home.

DeShaun L. Pruitt, of Lener Avenue Southwest, told police he was shot by someone he knows at that address around 11:10 p.m.

A Trumbull County grand jury indicted Pruitt last week on charges of heroin possession and aggravated drug possession.

In late 2001, Pruitt was sentenced to seven years in prison on a charge of felonious assault with a firearm.

Campbell conferences

CAMPBELL — The spring parent-teacher conferences for grades K-12 will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Parents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to meet and talk with their children’s teachers, officials said.

There will be no classes Friday.

Grant for ReStores

STRUTHERS — Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County ReStores, 480 Youngstown-Poland Road, received a $5,000 grant from the Dominion East Ohio Foundation.

The local organization was among eight Ohio Habitat for Humanity ReStores that received Dominion Foundation grants totaling $37,500. ReStores are nonprofit outlets that accept donated goods for resale.

Stephen Hanzely of the local Habitat said the money will be used to help defray the $170,000 cost of an addition to the Struthers store that is targeted for a March completion.

Valentine’s Day Walk

ALLIANCE — The John T. Huston-Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of Mount Union College will have a Valentine’s Day Walk with a Naturalist at 2 p.m. Sunday. No registration is required.

The center is located six miles south of Mount Union College on Daniel Street, just off state Route 183.

Apartment fire

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A fire heavily damaged an apartment in the Skyview Towers.

The fire department was called to the apartments, which houses many senior citizens, at 10 p.m. Sunday, the department said. A tenant in an apartment on the sixth floor of the 12-floor building had fallen asleep while smoking, and the bed caught fire, the department said. No one was hurt.

The building was evacuated for about two hours.
