Mason Shattuck, a Canfield High School graduate and one of Youngstown State University’s most involved students, credits his successful college career to the values instilled in him through Canfield High and the Canfield community.
“A great school like Canfield produces a lot of great students that go on to great universities — some of the best universities,” Shattuck said. “I want to remind students to be proud of where they came from and remember Canfield High School and the community of Canfield...Canfield is one of the best communities a student or a child can grow up in.”
At YSU, Shattuck is committed to building vibrant student life on campus. Shattuck, an intern in the school’s department of campus recreation, has been particularly involved in his fraternity, Alpha Phi Delta. He is currently the president of the organization, and he has also served as vice president, social chair, risk manager and Greek Week coordinator.
“A big part of my involvement has been my fraternity,” Shattuck said. “It has motivated me to better myself, to better the community and to better the university.”
Shattuck has also served as vice president of YSU’s Intrafraternity Council, and was a member of the Greek Campus Life Executive Board.
His largest endeavor, however, has been co-chairing the university’s annual Homecoming events for the past two years. The job included organizing all of the social activities for the weekend, which is one of the university’s largest events.
“Involvement provides great opportunities to network with other people and have real life experiences, like working with a team, organizing meetings,” Shattuck said. “It not only builds personal skills, but organizational skills and communication skills that you can use in the real world.”
Shattuck is equally as committed to service as he is to having fun. He was his fraternity’s Toy Drive chair, and he has been involved in the organization’s volunteer work at Park Vista and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. In addition, he spearheaded the IFC’s $500 donation to YSU’s recent United Way Drive.
This year, Shattuck co-hosted the university’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Breakfast for the second year. He has also co-hosted the Student Awards Banquet for two years.
Shattuck, a senior finance major, will graduate this May. He is interviewing with a local company in the financial services industry for a potential job next year.
“Mason Shattuck is without question one of our success stories,” Greg Gulas, the assistant director of campus recreation and student programming, said. “When something needs done, Mason always seems to be in the center, either coordinating or taking part in the project.”
