Lawrence County society plans traditional St. David’s celebration


NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The annual Lawrence County St. David’s Society celebration will be Feb. 27 at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2434 Wilmington Road.

Taking part in the event will be children wearing traditional Welsh attire and carrying the Welsh flag and daffodils, the flower of Wales.

The celebration will begin with a free public social and Welsh Market at 2:30 p.m., followed by a free Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh singing festival) at 3.

Geraint Wilkes will serve as conductor and soloist for the Gymanfa Ganu, and Lois Hopkins of New Wilmington will be the accompanist. Featured musical selections on the harp and fiddle will be performed by Allison and Laura Miller of Lisbon, Ohio.

Allison, who plays the harp, has studied under Robin Huw Bowen, internationally recognized as the foremost professional on the Welsh triple harp.

Laura has studied under fiddle masters Carl MacKenzie of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; Ann Wendy Stewart and Mike Vaas of Scotland, and Ed Pearlman of Vermont.

Paid reservations are required by Feb. 22 for the prime rib dinner to be served at 4 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $21, and checks, payable to Lawrence County St. David’s Society, should be mailed to Debbie McHattie, 409 Clen-Moore Blvd., New Castle, PA 16105.

After-dinner entertainment will feature Wilkes, the Miller sisters, Amy Johnson and her daughters Zoe, Grace, Edie and Sammi of Farmdale, Ohio, and a variety of instrumental selections, singing and Welsh folk tales.
