Boardman boys swimmers win last four meets


The Boardman High School boys swim team won its final four meets of the regular season and are now preparing for Feb. 13 sectional championships at the University of Akron.

The Spartans beat Poland 127-36, Howland 124-40, Canton McKinley 123-60 and Glenoak 110-73 in the last week of the dual meet season.

Boardman finished the season 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the Federal League. In the win against Poland, Boardman had four double winners in the individual events.

Junior Mike Reardon doubled up in the 100 (52.57) and 200( 1:58.88) freestyle events.

Senior Ryan Mitchell won the 200 individual medley in a career-best time of 2:11.85 and the 500 freestyle (5:25.21).

Freshman Ryan Bailey took down the 100 fly (57.40) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.18).

Junior Steven Moss won the 50 free (23.57) and junior Mike Henson posted a 58.99 in winning the 100 backstroke.

Boardman won two out of the three relays.

“Mike Reardon and Ryan Mitchell had a great meet. Both boys have been working very hard at practice and it showed in their races. They know how to swim to win,” said coach Terry O’Halloran.

Boardman dominated Howland with junior Mike Henson and freshman Ryan Bailey leading the way with double individual wins.

Henson won the 200 freestyle (1:58.28) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.20). Bailey captured wins in the 50 freestyle (24.60) and the 100 butterfly in the time of 58.35.

Senior Jake Santamas took first by posting the time of 5:48.81 in the 500 freestyle. Junior Steven Moss won the 100 free in the time of 54.40, while junior Ryan Mitchell took the 200 individual medley in the time of 2:14.54.

The Spartans won all three relays.

In a double dual meet competition against Federal League foes, the Spartans took down both Canton McKinley and Canton Glenoak.

O’Halloran praised the Spartans for their total team effort,

“Our guys came to Canton to swim fast and that’s what they did. This meet was a big upset in the Federal League,” he said.

The Spartans won nine out of the 12 events. Boardman had two double winners. Freshman Ryan Bailey posted a career-best time of 2:05.94 in winning the 200 individual medley and won the 100 breaststroke in the time of 1:04.53.

Junior Steven Moss won the 50 and the 100 freestyle events in career-best times of 23.11 and 51.26, respectively.

The Spartans won all three relays.

The boys will look to continue this success at the sectional championships at Ocasek Natatorium at the University of Akron Friday at 1:15 p.m.
