Local Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery stores closing

STAFF REPORT

Closing sales are under way at six Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video locations in the Mahoning Valley as parent-company Movie Gallery Inc. proceeds through Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The company will close Movie Gallery stores at five local locations: Belmont Avenue in Youngstown, Youngstown- Poland Road in Struthers, Elm Road and Parkman Road in Warren and East Broad Street in Newton Falls. It also will close Hollywood Video on South Avenue in Boardman.

Movie Gallery, based in Wilsonville, Ore., operates about a dozen DVD and game-rental stores in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

About 760 Movie Gallery, Hollywood Video and Game Crazy stores are slated for closing nationwide, according to a press release.

“The company anticipates closing additional stores during the Chapter 11 process,” according to the release.

The company filed for bankruptcy protection Wednesday, saying it would close one-third of its stores. This is the second time in three years that it has entered bankruptcy.

Movie Galley acquired Hollywood Entertainment Corp. in 2005.
