Pa. woman duped by 'faux' old friend on Facebook
SHARON, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania woman has been duped out of more than $1,300 by someone who pretended to be the daughter of an old friend on Facebook.
Police say someone hacked into the account of the social networking site so they could begin posting messages under someone’s account.
A woman in Sharon began communicating with the person who hacked into the account, believing she was in touch with a friend’s daughter.
At some point, the “daughter” claimed she was in London and had been robbed and needed money. Police say the Pennsylvania woman sent the person $1,220 using wire transfers that cost her another $99 to make.
Police say they’ve yet to charge anyone since the woman reported the scam Sunday.
