Holocaust drama ‘Block 5’ in Columbiana for final shows

THE VINDICATOR

Those who did not get a chance to see “Block 5” at the Victorian Players Theatre have three more chances.

The Holocaust drama, which is set in a Nazi concentration camp, will be performed this weekend at Main Street Theater in Columbiana.

“Block 5” just finished a three-weekend run at the Victorian that broke sales records at the small theater.

Several performances at the Vic were sold out, said J.E. Ballantyne Jr., who wrote, directed and produced the play.

“Block 5” premiered in 2005 and scored a slew of Marquee Awards.

After the current revival wraps up, it will be put on the shelf for at least five years.

“Unless other local or professional theaters pick up the rights for their own productions, I don’t see ‘Block 5’ returning for five or more years,” said Ballantyne, who is exploring options to turn the play into a film.

A DVD of the current production is being offered for sale. It includes the play, plus extras, including interviews with the cast and a post-show question-and-answer session with the audience.
