Boardman man jailed in beating of two women
YOUNGSTOWN — A Boardman man is in the Mahoning County jail with bond set at $200,000, accused of beating the mother of his children and doing harm to the woman’s pregnant sister.
Terrance L. Chatman, 27, of Aravesta Drive, appeared for arraignment Wednesday before Judge Robert Milich of Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of aggravated burglary, felonious assault and disrupting public services.
Chatman told the court he is a senior at Youngstown State University and on leave from gainful employment.
Prosecutors told the judge that Chatman has an extensive criminal history that includes assault, theft, carrying a concealed weapon, violating a protection order, contempt of court, illegal possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.
Judge Milich imposed a $200,000 bond and ordered Chatman to have no contact with the woman he is accused of assaulting. He also ordered Chatman placed on electronically monitored house arrest if he posts bond and gets out of jail.
According to a police report, Chatman went to the South Forest Avenue home of the 26-year-old mother of his two children and broke a coffee table by stomping on it.
He then went to an upstairs bathroom where the woman had taken refuge with her two sisters and kicked open the door.
Police said he slammed the woman’s head against a toilet before beating her and dragging her down some stairs.
Reports say Chatman punched and kicked the woman before hitting her in the head with the leg from the coffee table he had earlier broken. He also struck the woman’s sister as she tried to offer assistance, police reports said.
Prosecutors told the court the sister is pregnant.
Police reports also show that Chatman broke into the same woman’s home on the East Side in March 2009 after sending her a cell-phone text message telling her he was about to enter the house without permission.
During that reported burglary, Chatman is said to have broken a lamp, left all the water faucets running in the home and stolen a 7-foot ceramic giraffe.
The woman told police that Chatman is jealous of her new relationship.
