Trumbull to demolish 80 vacant buildings
A third of the homes in the first round of funding are in Warren Township.
WARREN — So far, the Trumbull County Planning Commission has received enough requests from township trustees to demolish about 80 vacant properties using federal Neighborhood Stabilization money.
However, there is enough federal- stimulus money available to take down at least 100, said Julie Green, grants coordinator for the planning commission. Deadlines are approaching to identify the homes to be demolished.
Green said township trustees across the county should take the necessary steps, which include passing a resolution giving the planning commission authority to demolish the structures, as soon as possible.
Trumbull County commissioners are expected to award contracts today to six Ohio companies to demolish the first 34 homes on the list. They are located in the village of McDonald and in the townships of Bristol, Brookfield, Howland, Hubbard, Johnston and Warren.
Green has received a list from township trustees of about 45 more properties so far that will make up the second round of demolitions. They include most of the townships in the first round, plus Bazetta, Weathersfield, Braceville and Newton townships, Green said.
The first-round demolitions will cost $77,800 with the largest contract of $29,620 going to Sereday Trucking Inc. of Brookfield. Other contracts to be awarded are to Kemppel Industries Inc. of Akron ($21,695), Trumbull Contracting Corp. of Brookfield ($18,200), J.S. Northeast Co. of Girard ($3,200), Holton Inc. of Lordstown ($3,060) and Mike Pusateri Excavating Inc. of East Liverpool ($2,035).
The cost of the first round of demolitions, including such costs as public notices, engineering and inspections, is about $97,000, or around $3,000 each.
Two homes in the first round are on Housel Craft Road in Bristol Township; one is on Greenville Road in Johnston Township; one is on East Marshall Street in McDonald.
There are eight in Hubbard Township: Homewood Avenue, Arthur Street, South Main Street, Lincoln Avenue, Seifert-Lewis Road, Poplar Avenue, Jacobs Road and East Liberty Street.
There are 12 in Warren Township: Gilmer Road, Briggs Road, Wood-Lenhart, Eagle Creek Road, Nutley Avenue, Bane Street, Karl Avenue, Eighth Street, Seventh Street, Bellcrest Street, Baker Avenue and Federal Street; there are seven in Brookfield Township: Brookfield Avenue, South State Line Road, Chestnut Street, Campbell Street, Warren-Sharon Road, Wheeler Street and Rose Avenue.
There are four in Howland Township: Aspinwall Avenue, Virginia Avenue, Orchard Avenue (lot reclamation only) and Barder Avenue.
Seventy-five percent of the properties need to be identified by the end of March, and all need to be identified by the end of June, Green said. The deadline for the demolitions to be complete is in 2013.
Trumbull County received $3.4 million through the program, $350,000 of which is set aside for Girard and $550,000 for Niles.
