Dr. Crans honored as Mahoning 2009 Distinguished Physician


Dr. Crans was named chief of surgery of Youngstown Hospital Association’s Northside and Southside hospitals in 1979.

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Charles A. Crans is the Mahoning County Medical Society’s 2009 Distinguished Physician.

He was presented the award at the society’s annual meeting last week conducted in the Grand Lobby of Powers Auditorium.

Also recognized were recipients of the Ohio State Medical Association Fifty Years in Medicine Award. Honorees are Drs. B. Patrick Brucoli, John J. Buckley Sr., D. James Dallis (posthumously), Nicholas DePizzo Sr., Earl Ebie and Sadiq Husain.

Drs. Karl Wieneke and John Turner, longtime friends and colleagues of Dr. Crans’, with whom he practiced general surgery, presented him the award.

Dr. Crans was joined in the ceremony by his wife, Teresa, son Dr. David Crans, daughters Darlene Brown and Donna Esterly, son-in-law Ron Brown, and grandson Ronnie Brown.

Dr. Crans joined Drs. Nelson, Flynn and Turner upon completion of his military service in the Navy, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant commander. During his tour, he was stationed at San Diego Naval Hospital, aboard the hospital ship U.S.S. Sanctuary off the Republic of Vietnam, and at Jacksonville Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla.

Born in Braddock, Pa., Dr. Crans graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served an internship at McKeesport Hospital and later completed a residency in general surgery at Youngstown Hospital Association.

In 1979, Dr. Crans was named chief of surgery of Youngstown Hospital Association’s Northside and Southside hospitals.

Dr. Crans was president of the medical society in 2007 and 2008.

He and his wife, who have five grown children and 11 grandchildren, live in Canfield and are active in St. Christine Church, Youngstown.
