Students accused of drinking alcohol at Canfield school event

staff report

CANFIELD — City police and school officials are investigating a weekend incident in which a group of students is accused of consuming alcohol at a school event.

Superintendent Dante Zambrini called police to the high school Saturday night during a dinner- theater performance by the choral department.

A student brought alcohol onto school grounds and put it into a plastic bottle along with red punch. Two students consumed the liquid with three others also taking drinks from it, the superintendent said.

All of the students are boys.

“The school is taking action as school policy dictates,” the superintendent said.

School policy calls for up to a 10-day suspension for such cases. The length of suspension, however, can be reduced if the student enrolls in an approved testing/counseling program.

The incident was discovered when students reported it to a teacher, who told the superintendent.

The police investigation continues and no charges have been filed.
