Sutton earns tourney MVP, leads Walsh

TORONTO

Cardinal Mooney High graduate L.J. Sutton scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Walsh men’s basketball team past Ryerson 88-64 and capture tournament MVP honors in the Ryerson Tournament.

Walsh’s 13-0 start matches their 13-0 start from the 1997-98 season.

Lamar Skeeter paced the Cavs with 19 points.

Slippery Rock 70, Grove City 46

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.

Rashiid Coleman scored 15 points off the bench for Slippery Rock.

Maron Brown added 14. Devin Taylor recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds for The Rock, which broke the game open with a 12-2 run midway through the second half.

Junior center Kris Verderber led Grove City with 12 points while senior forward Luke Tomaselli added eight points.

Bluffton 80, Westminster 60

BLUFFTON

Freshman guard Christian Shea led the Titans with 12 points, while sophomore forward Adam Carswell coming off the bench to score nine points and grab a game-high nine rebounds as Westminster (3-9) fell in the championship game of the Bluffton McDonald’s Holiday Tournament.

Junior guards Andy Timko (McDonald) and Anthony DeFelice (Poland) represented Westminster on the all-tournament team after they scored career highs of 21 and 17 vs. Pitt-Greensburg Wednesday.

Tournament MVP Mychal Hill led Bluffton (8-3) in the championship game with a game-high 22 points.

Clarion 91, Thiel 62

CLARION

Jamar Harrison scored a career-high 26 points while adding his second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds to help lead Clarion (7-0).

Blair Rozenblad (Kennedy Catholic) led Thiel with 26 points including 9 of 10 from the free throw line and 8 of 15 from the floor.

Aundra Jones (Kennedy Catholic) chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds and Lance Randall (Ursuline) 10 points.

Mount Union 98, Waynesburg 92

ALLIANCE

Mount Union senior Ben Hodkinson scored a career-high 22 points including four-straight free throws to ice a double overtime win.

Jimmy Wood had 20 points, Matt Kiger came off the bench with 20 points, Dave Pellerite had his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Matt Wier (Mohawk) tallied 11 to lead Mount Union (5-7) to a second straight win.

WOMEN

Mount Union 79, Juniata (Pa.) 68

HUNTINGDON, Pa.

Rosa LaMattina scored 19 points and Kori Wiedt contributed 13 points and nine rebounds for the Purple Raiders (10-1), who rallied from an 11-point deficit to win their fifth straight in Juniata’s Holiday Classic.

For the home team, Jen Hnatuck scored 17 points and Jordan Hileman finished with 14 points and seven assists.

Seton Hill 60, Slippery Rock 52

GREENSBURG, PA.

Seton Hill opened up a 10-point halftime lead and increased its lead to 21 points in the second half. Four players scored in double figures for SRU (1-7), led by Shannon Lee with 13 points.

She also pulled down six rebounds and handed out four assists. Danielle Smith added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Jordan Burkes led Seton Hill with a game-high 18 points.

Hiram 50, Washington & Jefferson 38

WASHINGTON, PA.

Senior guard Jess Cowan scored a game-high 19 points with nine rebounds for the Terriers (7-3), who won despite shooting just 25 percent from the floor.

Junior guard Kelsey Durichko grabbed a career-high 15 boards to go along with eight points and five assists.

Ashley Kirkpatrick scored eight points and Kayla Strimel added a team-high 10 rebounds for the Presidents (4-6).
