Veronica Hicks had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Michigan upset No. 13 Ohio State 64-51 in its Big Ten opener Thursday.

The Wolverines (8-5, 1-0 Big Ten) snapped a 14-game losing streak to Ohio State, beating them for the first time since 2001.

Ohio State (8-4, 0-1) has lost three straight, starting with a 31-point loss to top-ranked Connecticut.

Jantel Lavender had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Ohio State, but point guard Samantha Prahalis missed 12 of her 13 field-goal attempts.

Michigan jumped out to a quick 24-4 lead as Ohio State missed 11 of its first 13 shots.

The Buckeyes, who lost to Duquesne on Tuesday night, made it 28-20 late in the half, but the Wolverines scored the final six points.

Michigan, which never trailed, outshot Ohio State 46 percent to 23 percent in the half.

Ohio State continued to struggle in the second half, and their frustration showed when Prahalis was called for an intentional foul after taking Jenny Ryan down by the head.

Amber Stokes and Courtney Boylan picked up a double technical for a minor confrontation late in the half.

Ryan, though, picked up her fourth foul with 11:51 to go, and fellow starter Nya Jordan limped off with what appeared to be a right knee injury less than a minute later.

Jordan did not return, but joined her teammates for a midcourt celebration after the final buzzer.

Ohio State failed to take advantage, however, struggling to keep its shooting percentage above 25 percent, and Boylan’s 3-pointer gave the Wolverines a 48-34 lead with eight minutes left.
