New Year’s Eve events offer family entertainment

Families can again ring in the new year with entertainment-laden events in downtown Youngstown, Canfield and Salem.
First Night Youngstown will begin at 5 p.m Friday with opening ceremonies at St. Columba Cathedral on West Wood Street. The 10-minute event will include remarks by dignitaries folllowed by the lighting and send-off of 12 sky lanterns in front of the cathedral. A half-hour interfaith service will begin at 5:15 p.m. in St. Columba.
Featured acts at the Youngstown event include Sidekicks, a female barbershop quartet comedy act from Poland, who will perform from 7-9 p.m. at the Masonic Temple on Wick Avenue. After the quartet will be acoustic guitarist Brian Henke of Cleveland.
Rock’n’roll music with Magma, November Loop and karaoke will be centered at Choffin Career Center from 6 p.m. to midnight. Jones for Revival will play from 10 p.m. to midnight at 20 Federal Place.
The Mt. Olivet hand-bell choir from Columbiana County will perfrom from 7 to 10 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, and concert singer Sophia Brooks, with Wilbert Ervin, will perform sacred music from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Columba.
Activities for children will be centered at the SMARTS Center from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Covelli Centre will be open for ice skating from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
