Scholars program

YOUNGSTOWN

The Ohio State University Young Scholars Program of Youngstown had its first meeting this week with new Superintendent Connie Hathorn, who addressed participants and parents, said Tiffany Quinones, the program’s new coordinator.

The program, founded in 1988, is a comprehensive pre-collegiate and collegiate program designed to enhance the academic, personal and career development of its students. It annually identifies and serves hundreds of academically talented first-generation college students from economically challenged backgrounds. They are required to maintain an overall grade-point average of 3.0 or above. The program is designed to increase the number of black, Latino/Hispanic, American Indian and Appalachian students at OSU.

Quinones said the program, open to city school students, will be accepting nominations of current sixth-grade students beginning Jan. 5. For information, contact the YSP office at 330-744-5907.
