Golden String starts online radio station

YOUNGSTOWN

Golden String has launched a webcast that gives its clients the opportunity to work in a radio-station atmosphere. Golden String radio (goldenstringradio.org) began Dec. 1 and is believed to be the first Internet radio station operated by people with disabilities, according to spokesperson Chandra Brode. It operates out of Golden String’s offices on North Pearl Street on the East Side.

Golden String is a non-profit organization that provides recreation and socialization activities to people with multiple mental and physical disabilities. Sponsorship packages for advertisers are available, as well as individual memberships at $60 per year. For more information, call Brode at 440-969-8907.

The webcast is modeled after a traditional radio station and operates daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many Golden String clients have a deep admiration of music and have expressed an interest in being DJs, said Brode. Golden String clients report on news, sports and weather, play their favorite music and host specialty programs, including a polka hour and an Elvis Presley show.
