Stewart breaks school record in 200 freestyle


The Poland girls and boys swim team hosted its second home meet of the season at YSU’s Beeghly Natatorium Dec. 9. Despite strong performances and a school record-breaking time for Poland, the Canfield girls and boys teams outscored the Bulldogs 125–56 and 126–32, respectively.

For the Poland girls, Becca Stewart took first place in both of her individual events. She was first to the wall in the 200 free with a time of 2:07.46 and won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:47.05. Stewart’s time in the 200 free set a new school record in this event. The previous record was 2:08.74 in 2000.

Other Lady bulldogs to place first in events were Kayleigh Lavorini, who finished with a time of 1:01.68 in the 100 free. Lavorini also placed third in the 100 breaststroke, coming in with a time of 1:21.34.

Also adding critical team points were Stephanie Andrews, placing second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:12.42 and third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:45.56. Other third-place finishers were Jaci Mullally, who finished 29.36 in the 50 free, and Elise Hurtuk, who finished 1:12.91 in the 100 back.

In the diving competition, Poland’s Celia Mellilo placed second in a competition against three Canfield divers, achieving a score of 172.13.

For the boys, taking second place in both of his individual events was captain Ian Harker, coming in with a time of 2:06.88 in the 200 free and 1:10.93 in the 100 breaststroke.

Third-place finishers for the boys were Sam Cowles in the 100 back in 1:19.27, Jake Amon in the 50 free in 27.84 and Matt Misko in the 500 free in 7:01.35.

With a time of 2:15.55, the Poland boys 200 medley relay team of Robich, back; Misko, breaststroke; Cowles, fly and Amon, free, placed second. The 400 free relay team of Robich, Amon, Cowles and Harker finished third with a time of 4:16.59.
