Boardman varsity wrestlers beat Fitch

The Boardman varsity wrestling team split matches against East Ohio Wrestling League rivals Fitch and Howland on Saturday. The Spartans defeated Fitch 34-30, but lost to Howland 49-20.

Boardman got two wins each from Nick Mancini (103 pounds), John Dillon (130) and Nico Graziani (160). Dillon’s victories came by a 12-0 major decision and a technical fall. Graziani won by pin and tech fall. In the team victory over Fitch. Boardman performed strong in the lighter weights, winning the first five matches and building a 19-0 advantage. The Falcons rallied by claiming wins in five of the final six matches, but fell four points short.

Howland won 10 of the 14 matches against Boardman to earn the team victory. Winning bouts for Boardman were Dillon, Graziani, Mancini and DeVoun Fletcher (189).

Youth wrestling begins

The youth wrestling season began Dec. 4 at Canfield Middle School. More than 350 kids in grades six and and under from 11 local wrestling clubs competed in the first meet of the seven-week season. The kids compete in two matches every weekend in December and January (with the exception of Dec. 26). Wrestling begins at noon with the second session at 2:30 The teams competing are Canfield, Boardman, South Range, Salem, United, Crestview, Columbiana, Beaver Local, Wellsville, West Branch and Alliance.

Glenwood boys swept by AMS Blue

Boardman Glenwood’s eight-grade boys basketball team fell to Austintown Blue 40-21 on Dec. 9.

The Spartans fought back from an early deficit to stay in the game, allowing only three points in the second quarter. The offense was led by Aaren Thompkins with seven points. The eighth-grade team is coached by Jim Bennett and Justin Coffin.

The seventh-grade squad lost to AMS Blue, 35-18. The Spartans were led by Kelan Millerleile and Preston Stitt.
