Phantom squirts tie Cambria 2-2


The Phantom Squirts hockey team tied 2-2 at home against the Cambria Warriors Dec. 5.

The Phantoms opened the scoring when Matthew Baggethun (Boardman) scored 1:45 into the game. The Phantoms controlled the puck for the rest of the period and led 1-0 after one.

Devin Whitaker (Boardman) increased the advantage to 2-0 on a goal with 4:16 remaining in the second period.

Cambria scored with 1:31 left in the second period on a breakaway goal to trim the deficit to 1-0. The Phantoms held the slim lead throughout the third period until Cambria deflected the puck off a Phantoms player and in for the tying goal with only 46 seconds remaining in the game.

Goalie Nick Beck (Boardman) faced 25 shots. The Phantoms had 14 shots on goal.

On Dec. 4, the team traveled to Robert Morris for the first road trip of the season. The Arctic Foxes scored two goals in the second period to hand the Phantoms their second loss of the year.

The Phantoms’ offense struggled, only attempting 10 shots on goal the entire game. Defensively, behind the play of Keith Smith (Austintown) and Tyler Berry (Canfield), the Phantoms were able to keep the Foxes to just 17 shots on goal. Beck had 15 saves between the pipes.
