‘Virgin’ actor gets life sentence

VISTA, Calif.

An actor who appeared in the film “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with possible parole in 12 years for stabbing his ex-girlfriend more than 20 times when he stopped by her home and found her with another man. Shelley Malil — who played Haziz, a co-worker of Steve Carell’s character in the film — was sentenced by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Harry Elias three months after a jury convicted the actor of attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The victim, Kendra Beebe, suffered punctured lungs and wounds to her neck, chest, back and arms in the 2008 attack.

Malil, 45, testified at trial that he visited Beebe at her San Marcos home in suburban San Diego in August 2008 to apologize for taking personal items from her house and to warn that he e-mailed sexually explicit photos of the couple to her co-workers. He stabbed her with a kitchen knife after finding her drinking wine with another man.

Musical ‘Spider-Man’ hits another delay

NEW YORK

Opening night for the troubled new Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has been delayed yet again. Producers on Friday pushed the official opening from Jan. 11 to Feb. 7, deciding they need to work out more kinks before allowing critics to weigh in. It was the fourth major delay in performances this year.

The $65 million musical is the brainchild of Tony-winning director and co-writer Julie Taymor and U2’s Bono and The Edge, who wrote the music. More than eight years in the making, delays and money woes have plagued the show’s launch.

Forbes’ antique toys sell for $2.3 million

NEW YORK

A collection of rare and valuable toys amassed over almost 40 years by the late Malcolm Forbes and his sons sold for $2.3 million at auction in New York.

The Forbes collection of antique toys was estimated to bring in anywhere from $3 million to $5 million at Friday’s sale at Sotheby’s.

It included toy boats, soldiers, motorcycles and board games, including a handmade Monopoly game from 1933.

The highlight was a 3-foot-long replica of the Cunard Line’s Lusitania ocean liner, complete with crew and passengers. It sold for $194,500 to an American collector, a record for a toy boat at auction. The price included the buyer’s premium.

Malcolm Forbes paid $28,600 for the Lusitania at Sotheby’s in 1983. It had been estimated to bring in $100,000 to $200,000.

McCartney plays gig at tiny London club

LONDON

Paul McCartney has played a rare lunchtime gig at a tiny London club to try to save the music landmark. The former Beatle’s show before about 300 fans at the 100 Club on Friday was the smallest he had played for more than a decade. The superstar, who is more accustomed to playing at sold-out stadiums throughout the world, was raising money to help owners cope with a steep rent increase.
