Three Hilltop Elementary School students were awarded first place in their divisions in the State Fire Marshal’s fire safety poster contest.

Brenna Broker placed first in the second-grade division, Ally Stein placed first in the third-grade division and Candice Kraykovich placed first in the fourth-grade division.

Canfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Don Hutchison and firefighters Neil Cornelius and Brian Charles presented the winners with red first-place ribbons and gift certificates for four games of bowling at Amron Lanes.

Broker’s, Stein’s and Kraykovich’s posters will advance to the state level contest and, if chosen, their artwork will appear in the State Fire Marshall’s fire prevention calendar.

“In the past, we have had several students from both Hilltop Elementary and C.H. Campbell Elementary win on the state level and their artwork has appeared in the State Fire Marshal’s calendar,” said Hutchison.

Teachers inform the students of the contest, and it is optional for students to enter the contest, which is held every year. Every school has the option to participate in the fire safety poster contest.

Another artistically-talented Hilltop Elementary School student received honorable mention in the Juvenile Courts poster contest sponsored by Judge Theresa Dellick. Brooke Broker, a fourth-grader, was recognized for her Reaching for the Stars poster.

Broker won art supplies for her honorable mention award.

All children in Mahoning County school districts are eligible to enter posters in the contest.

“Judge Dellick sponsors this poster contest because she believes in the importance of schools and our students,” said Cathy Mowry, Hilltop Elementary School principal.
