Canfield wrestlers beat Fitch, Beaver Local

For the first time in recent memory, the Canfield varsity wrestling team defeated both Fitch and Beaver Local in the same night.

The Cardinals hosted a tri-meet Dec. 7, which also included matches at the middle school and junior varsity levels. Wrestling took place on four mats.

The varsity (Black) team defeated Austintown 45–24 and then Beaver Local, 39-34. Coach Dean Conley said this accomplishment was the first time in memory that Canfield was able to beat both of these programs in the same night.

Top wrestlers for Canfield with two victories on the night were Zach Kay (119 pounds), Robbie Reed (130), Alex Benedict (135), Eric Mirto (160) and Curtis Burns (215).

The middle school team split on the night, defeating the Austintown Red team, but falling to the Austintown Blue team.

The junior varsity (Red) team traveled to Butler, Pa., Saturday for the Doc Phillips JV tournament. Top wrestlers for the Canfield were John Poullas (first place), Tom Crump (second place), Kyle Hido (second place) and Stephen Hamilton (second place).

The wrestling program’s Wrestlers of the Week were announced. For Week 1, Eric Mirto took the varsity honors and Shawn Williams the JV honors. For Week 2 of the season, Curtis Burns was the varsity winner and Steve Hamilton the JV winner.

Canfield hosts its annual “Holiday Duals” tournament today at 10 a.m. Teams attending this year include Conneaut, defending Division II state champion St. Paris Graham, Hubbard, Lakeside, Manchester, Revere, Rootstown, Southeast and Tallmadge.

Admission is $4 for students and $6 for adults. Canfield residents with “Golden Ager” cards are admitted for free.
