Their goal was to introduce the students to sounds and history of string instruments.

Union Elementary students listened to the sounds of the Youngstown Symphony String Quartet Dec. 1 when the group visited the school.

The quartet, consisting of Gloria Slocum, Natalie Sahyoun, Scott Burns and Betsy Jones, played more than 12 selections for students and staff members.

Music from the genres of jazz, rock, classical and pop were played, but the Christmas classic “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” was a definite crowd pleaser. Between selections, Slocum talked to the students about the history of the violin family and how they are made. Students were surprised to find out the instrument’s bow is made partially of horsehair.

The quartet played together and individually so students could hear how each instrument sounded. Slocum answered questions from students following their performance.
